The difference

The early church was married to poverty, prisons and persecutions. Today, the church is married to prosperity, personality and popularity. - Leonard Ravenhill

The glorious Church

The church, in the mind of God, transcends the ages. It is a great and powerful fact, not only of eternity but also of time. It is no mere theory. It is a visible reality, and can be known now as surely as it will be in an eternity to come. Our Lord, in that striking series of parables recorded in Matthew 13, likens the church to a pearl. A pearl increases in size with the passage of time, but at whatever stage of its development it may be found it is no less a pearl, a thing of glory and beauty. It is true that there are many yet to be added to it, but wherever and whenever it is found it is complete, and an expression of the glory of God. – John W Kennedy

Redemptive criticism

Let our criticism be redemptive to others because it is made in love.  Let our acceptance of criticism be redemptive to ourselves because it is accepted in grace. – John W Kennedy

‘I know Chrysostom’.

John Chrysostom (AD 354-407), the bishop of Constantinople, had made himself very unpopular at the court of the Roman emperor. He had spoken out candidly and courageously against the immorality at court and thus incurred the displeasure of the emperor.

It is reported that the emperor took counsel with his advisors as to how best to silence Chrysostom. ‘Send him into exile, then you will get rid of him’, said one minister. Another suggested confiscating all his possessions. A third proposal was: ‘Cast him into prison!’  A fourth suggested beheading him. The fifth counsellor had a completely different idea: ‘Punishing by these means will prove useless. I know Chrysostom. Exiling him will only open up another field for his activity. If we take his goods, the poor will come to his aid. In prison he would enjoy the opportunity to meditate on the love of God. And killing him will only give him the joy of being with his Lord in heaven. If you really want to make that man suffer as a punishment, you must make him sin. There is nothing on earth that he fears more than sin.’
